How to Find Discount Air Travel and Pay Less

May 20th, 2011

Finding discount air travel can be one of the best ways that you can manage to get a cheaper trip. Traveling today can be very expensive, no matter where you are going or what you want to be doing. The air travel, as well, can also be frustrating. Therefore, you want to be sure that you are able to find the right type of discount air travel for your needs.

First of all, it is important to look at how finding cheap airfare can help you out. If you are able to find discount air travel, it means that you are able to get a great deal on the traveling that you are already doing. Many people simply figure in the cost of their airfare when they plan a trip, which means that they don’t bother to look for any better deals or any cheaper airfare. However, great deals on airfare can save you much more than you know. If you are able to save a few hundred dollars on your airfare, you will be able to spend that money in other ways as you travel – which will also be very meaningful for you.

Finding discount air travel, however, is going to be the tough part because the air fare is usually one of the most expensive components of a trip. As you are planning your trip, you might be tempted to simply book the first flight that you find – or the one that is the most direct flight. However, these have all been shown to be the most expensive, and so if you really want to save money on this type of travel, you are going to have to be willing to do your research. Doing research is something that might take some time. However, it has been proven that if you spend some time doing research, you can save up to 70%, or even more, on the same trip at list prices.

In order to find discount air travel, you need to know what you are looking for ahead of time. You can do this by making a list of the exact specifications you will need to meet to plan your trip – the airfare, your rental car, your hotel and everything else that is pertinent should be planned out ahead of time. This will allow you to get the most out of the planning process and to save money while you are at it. Can you be flexible on your travel dates? If so, you can sometimes save significantly.

In today’s tough economic times, it is important to do everything that you can to save money. In this case, a little bit of research goes a long way towards saving you cash and helping you find the best deal, especially for discount air travel as well as the other components of your trip like a rental car and hotel.

Travel and Flight Guide to Amritsar – Home Of The Golden Temple, Punjab

May 18th, 2011

Translated as “holy nectar”, Amritsar is the home to the Sikh Religion and now the tourist, travel and flight gateway to Punjab, India. Amritsar is now well connected and the best way to arrive is either by train from Delhi or on the many cheap Amritsar Flights from Delhi, Birmingham or London. The airlines are Jet Airways, Turkmenistan Airlines, Uzbekistan Airways and Air India.

At the heart of Amritsar City is the Sri Harmandir Sahib, also know as the Golden Temple in Amritsar – the holiest shrine of the Sikh religion. Also known as the Sri Darbar Shaib, it is in the center of the old part of Amritsar. The Golden Temple sits on a rectangular platform, surrounded by a pool of water called the Amrit Sarovar from which the City is named. Click here for the Golden Temple History.

The entrance to the Golden Temple complex is through an ornate archway with intricate inlay work. Verses from the Granth Sahib are inscribed on the doorway. The main north entrance is under a Victorian clock tower. Known as the Darshani Deori, the entrance is up a flight of steps and down again to the temple and holy tank. The temple is a two story marble structure reached by a causeway known as Guru´s Bridge. The lower story is in white marble with the walls decorated with inlaid flower and animal motifs in the pietradura style of the Taj Mahal. The architecture of the golden temple is a blend of the Hindu and Muslim styles.

The upper story is gold plated, crowned with a dome (the Golden Dome) shaped like an inverted lotus. With the first light of dawn, the reflection of the temple in the tank gives an ethereal atmosphere to the complex. As the sun shifts, the temple presents myriad views, each magnificent and captivating. The Golden Dome (said to be glided with 100 kg of pure gold) is supposed to represent an inverted lotus flower, pointing back to earth to symbolize the Sikh´s concern with the problems of this world.

The temple building has four entrances instead of the usual single entry. This is symbolic of the openness of Sikhism and indicates that followers of all faiths are allowed inside. The walls within are decorated with carved wooden panels and elaborate inlay work in silver and gold. The Adi Granth, compiled by Guru Arjan Dev, rests on a throne beneath a jewel-encrusted canopy. Priests conduct continuous recitation of verses from the holy book in 3-hour shifts. A complete reading of the text stakes 48 hours. The original copy of the Guru Granth Sahib is kept under pink shroud in the, Golden Temple during the day and at around 10 p.m. each day is ceremoniously returned to the Akal Takht (Sikh Parliament) building. The morning processional ceremony takes place at 4 a.m. in Summer and at 5 a.m. in Winter, when Sri Guru Granth Sahib is bought from Akal takhat Sahib in a procession to the Sanctum Sanctorum, which is washed with milk.

The Akal Takht, next to the Golden Temple, is the seat of the Shiromani Gurudwara Prabandhak Committee, the religious governing body of the Sikhs. The building of the Akal Takht was begun by Guru Arjan Dev and completed in 1609 by Guru Hargobind. If you miss the early morning or evening processions, the palanquin that bears the Adi Granth can be seen in the treasury room on the first floor of the Akal Takht. The palanquin is set with precious stones and has silver poles and a gold canopy.

Shrines on the northern edge of the corridor are venerated as the 68 holy shrines of the Hindus. According to the teachings of Guru Arjan Dev, it was enough for the devout to visit these shrines and not visit all the original Hindu shrines which are spread all over the country. Many of these shrines have now been converted into a martyr’s gallery showing the gruesome history of the Sikhs.

Around the Parikrama, or pathway, are four rectangular cubicles where Granthis (priests) sit and recite the Granth Sahib. Pilgrims leave offerings at the steps, and can also get the holy book recited in their names for a donation. At the eastern end are two brick watchtowers called the Ramgarhia Minars, which were damaged during Operation Blue Star in 1984. The Guru-ka-langar or community canteen is a Sikh institution, which was started by Guru Amar Das in the 16th century. The practice of eating together encouraged shedding of inhibitions and the principle of equality. The community kitchen feeds up to 10,000 people in a day, free of charges. The food is normally chapattis and lentils.

The Jubi tree, at the north western corner of the complex was planted some 450 year ago by the temple’s first head priest. The old, gnarled tree is believed to have special powers and childless women tie strips of cloth on it to be blessed with sons. Marriage deals are also fixed under the tree, though this practice is disapproved by the temple authorities. Two flag staffs joined in the middle with the emblem of Guru Hargobind symbolise the dual aspects of Sikhism – religion and politics. Two swords of the emblem are enclosed in a circle with the inscription Ek Onkar (God is one). The Guru Ram Das and Guru Nanak hostels on one side of the complex offer free accommodation up to three nights for visitors.

The Golden Temple is open to all. Pilgrims and visitors to the Golden Temple must remove their shoes and cover their heads before entering the precincts. No Smoking is allowed inside the whole temple area, photography is permitted only in/from the Prakarma , the marble pathway that surrounds the sacred pool. An English speaking guide is available at the information office near clock Tower that marks the temples main entrance. The information office has a number of interesting free publications.

Travel and Tourism, a Hot Topic in Sierra Leone

May 17th, 2011

Until a few days ago, if you had asked me to tell you about Sierra Leone, I would have had to think long and hard to tell you much about this West African country. I could probably have explained roughly where the country is located. I may have mentioned something about the slave trade being connected to Sierra Leone. I could certainly have told you that they had experienced a brutal civil war. I might even have admitted that I wasn’t entirely sure whether the war was 100% over. And that’s about it.

Slavery and war. A pretty negative view of what is in fact an exceptionally positive country. Today, I see Sierra Leone from an entirely different perspective.

It is difficult to ignore Sierra Leone’s history and focus purely on the present. Once a fertile area inhabited by dozens of tribes, it was settled by the Portuguese in the 1400′s who built a fort as a trading post for gold, spices, ivory and slaves. A British protectorate in later years, Sierra Leone had the dubious honour of becoming home to more than 40,000 freed slaves who gave Freetown its name. As a protectorate, Sierra Leone was exploited for its mineral and diamond wealth in the 1900′s and Sierra Leonean’s fought against the Germans in Cameroon in the First World War, and alongside the British in the Second World War. In 1961, Sierra Leone achieved independence from Britain and governed itself peacefully for 30 years. The peace was not to last and was followed by a decade of brutal civil war that destroyed the economy, brutalised the people and left a country that is rich in resources as one of the poorest in the world.

The conflict was officially declared over in January 2002, and President Kabbah reelected in May 2002. Since then, the people of Sierra Leone have been pulling together to repair, renew and regenerate.

Whilst doing research for a new website looking at travel and tourism in Sierra Leone, I came into contact with Sierra Leoneans from all manner of backgrounds living in both Sierra Leone and elsewhere. Their passion for the country was infectious: they clearly wanted to get the message across that Sierra Leone has far more to offer than a sad recent history and that reconstruction is moving ahead at a rapid pace. And indeed, proof of reconstruction is everywhere – new roads are being built, mines are being re-opened, dam projects started before the war are once again underway, markets are once again thriving and humming with life. There is also a great deal of confidence in Sierra Leone’s potential as a tourist destination: a Chinese company has recently invested a reputed US$270 million in the hotel infrastructure; enterprising companies like Kevin McPhillips Travel (based in the UK, USA and the Netherlands) offer exclusive twice weekly flights to Sierra Leone; African Tour specialists are researching viable package holidays in the region. The exciting thing about investment in Sierra Leone is that more is set to follow!

They have a right to be confident. The beaches along Sierra Leone’s golden peninsula are said to be one of the world’s best kept secrets. Secluded, clean and stretching for miles on end, beach tourism is one of the top items on the government’s tourism promotion agenda. Beaches with very British names like Kent, Lumley, Sussex and York mix with more African names like Bureh Town, Tokey and Mammah beach, and

Although many of the forests and much of the wildlife has been disturbed and in some cases, destroyed, by the war, eco-tourism is an important focus of Sierra Leoneans and natural treasures like Outamba-Kilimi National Park, populated by game animals such as elephants, chimpanzees and pigmy hippos, and Mount Bintimani, the highest point in West Africa, are just two of the worthwhile wildlife attractions on offer. Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary rescues orphaned and captured chimps and has been described as one of the most successful Sierra Leonean wildlife endeavours, whilst Tiwai Island is home to over 3000 chimps as well as other game.

Lakes, rivers and dams are perfect for picnics and relaxing. The marshlands hide a myriad of colourful birds – indeed, the bird life has been less affected by the war than the animals, and everywhere you go, the air is filled with birdsong. Sierra Leone is a bird-watchers dream! Tiwai Island for one boasts over 135 different bird species!

For culture vultures and those with historical interests, the remnants of the slave trade make interesting and though-provoking expeditions. Bunce Island, a slave trading fortress, is a brief boat trip up the river; Freetown is itself a monument to freed slaves and its Cotton Tree, which stands in the heart of what is thought to be an old slave market, is now an impressive national symbol. Graves, monuments and forts are all that remain of British and Portuguese power in Sierra Leone: each has a tale to tell. There are over 16 different ethnic groups in the country, including the Krio, descendents of freed slaves who speak an English-based Creole called Krio, and visiting villages and chatting to people in markets and in the streets is rewarding for all parties!

Freetown is probably the most developed of the cities, offering a level of safety that is difficult to match even in Western countries. Hotels, restaurants and nightspots are sprouting like mushrooms, and eating out in Sierra Leone promises a range of traditional and international treats, and seafood that is beyond belief!

One has to wonder what attraction will tip the scales in making Sierra Leone the popular destination that it once was before the civil war. Based on my experiences with Sierra Leoneans in recent weeks, I feel that it will be the people who make the difference. Without exception, every Sierra Leonean that I have met or worked with has been proud of their country, proud of its progress and excited about the future. They are unfailingly welcoming, greeting aid-workers and travellers alike with smiles that you can only find in Africa, with an optimism – no, positivity – that other countries would do well to emulate.

Puerto Vallarta Remains a Safe Place For Travel and to Retire

May 16th, 2011

Puerto Vallarta is known for its beauty, culture and friendly people and is still considered one of the safest places to visit or retire. The Sierra Madre mountains surround the Bay of Banderas, the second largest bay in North America, second to the Hudson bay. People from around the world come to enjoy its pristine beaches and surrounding jungles. Fun activities are abound; sailing, fishing, hiking, mountain biking, kayaking, horseback riding, bird watching, tequila tasting, walking through beautiful botanical gardens, art enthusiasts and eating exquisite foods, having something to offer for everyone. For those considering retiring to the area, a wide range of homes are available whether it be beach front, hillside or back country haciendas at all price levels ranging from the low 100K to multi-million dollar villas on the beach are available.

Over the past couple of years Mexico has received a great deal of negative press regarding the safety of foreigners traveling and retiring in Mexico. The fact is that a large percentage of violent crimes are connected to inner fighting of the drug cartels and drug related crimes. If you discount any drug related crimes which do not involve the public at large, tourists or retirees, one could say that Mexico is one of the safest places to visit or live in the world. In fact, less than one percent of violent crimes involve the general public, that is one crime per thousand, where the U.S. has a much higher rate with almost five per thousand.

It could be said that visiting or living in Los Angeles is much more dangerous than most parts of Mexico. What areas you visit in any region around the world is directly correlated to one’s safety. One would never venture into the East Los Angeles area knowing that it one of the most dangerous places in the United States. The same applies to any city around the world. If you travel to a foreign country it is always recommended to educate oneself what areas to avoid.

Puerto Vallarta has always been rated one of the safest and friendliest places to live and visit and continues to remain so. Violent crimes are un-heard of and any crime that does take place, are in locations that are known to be unsafe whether you are a local or a foreigner, and if a crime does take place it is almost always drug related. Vallarta relies on most of their revenue coming from tourists and the rapidly growing retirees moving to the area, therefore the local government expends a great amount of effort and money to protect locals and foreigners alike. The fact that one sees a great deal of police force when visiting Vallarta, is not that crime is high, but are there to guarantee everyone’s safety. In addition to the local police force, military personnel are also in place to deal with any drug related crimes, creating an even safer environment. Puerto Vallarta has the, justly deserved reputation, for safety and security. It’s quite safe to stroll back to your hotel or home at 3am without any hassle at all.

The negative press one usually hears involving foreigners is mainly related to excessive drinking and unsafe activities. Accidents involving spring breakers and foreigners can occur any place in the world, so of course it is

Discount Cruises for Group Vacationers

May 13th, 2011

Regardless of whether it is a church group, family reunion, group of friends, or other association, group vacations are becoming increasingly popular, especially when it comes to cruises. Group cruises are a great way to connect with your fellow travelers and share meaningful experiences. But these cruises can get expensive. Luckily, many cruise lines offer discounts to groups that can save you and your travel companions serious money. If you are considering a cruise as a group, there are a few things that you should know.

Book Discount Group Cruises in Advance

The best advice you can get when it comes to getting discount cruises for your group is to plan in advance. The worst thing you and your group can do is waiting until the last minute to book everything. Many family reunion cruises are organized and booked a year in advance.  Another benefit to booking early is that you are given first choice of cabin locations. This allows you to book the nicer cabins, the least expensive cabins, or simply opt to keep everyone in your group close together. Reserving rooms for special group events or banquets is also easier when you book your group in advance.

Often, the larger the group, the bigger your discount will be. The best discounts start once you exceed 15 passengers (excluding children).  Large cruise lines like having cabins booked, so they offer large discounts for booking in advance, especially for extras like casino credit and spa services.

How to Find Discount Cruises for Group Vacationers

When searching for a discount group cruise, it’s important to shop around. You will find great offers online, but don’t be limited in where you search for discounted prices. Today, as more people opt for stay-cations over vacations, you are more likely to see discounted group tickets advertized online, especially for groups who started the process and then failed to get the participation required.

If you are looking well in advance, then you can also sign up with major cruise lines to receive emails on discount cruises. While the Internet will be your best bet for finding discount cruises for your group, don’t forget to check your local papers and ask around.  Often times, neighbors, church members, co-workers or friends will have great tips on good discount cruises.

Another way to get a discount cruise for your group is to go on a repositioning cruise — a well kept secret among cruise lines and frequent cruise goers. Typically in the spring and fall, cruise ships must travel from one part of the world to another. This is called a repositioning cruise. These cruises can have discounts of up to for 40 percent, and even higher in some instances. However, this is not always the best option, since these cruises last much longer than most. Repositioning cruises are usually not suited for groups with a limited amount of vacation time.

Take advantage of your current affiliations. Many people belong to discount programs such as AARP and AAA. These organizations often have agreements with many of the major cruise lines, so you may be able to get bigger discounts for your group. Also, consider looking at credit card rewards, which may help you get discount cruises for your group.

Keep in mind that it never hurts to pick up the phone and ask. Contact a few cruise lines to see if they offer discounts for senior citizens, military members, teachers, government employees or any other group. And if you live close to a cruise line, contact the line to see if they give discounts to residents. To boost sales during the off season, cruise lines sometimes offer discounts to residents for less popular cruise destinations.

Your group could also consider sharing rooms. If your group can stay three or four to a room, you can get better deals. However, these are often cramped quarters, so it is usually on recommended for younger groups.

If you have done group cruises before, then consider going back to the cruise line that you have already used. Cruise lines often offer loyalty discounts for groups.

Before you book your group cruise, it is important to do your research. It is critical that you get all of the pertinent information that your group needs for their cruise.  Be sure that you understand what is included, what the cruise lines payment programs and policies are, the items that you can and cannot bring along, which activities are available and what your group can expect.

With these tips and resources, you can find affordable cruises for your group vacation, regardless of your destination. The best cruises for group vacationers are those that are well planned.

Cheap Airfares: Understanding The Basics Of It

May 12th, 2011

As a smart traveller, you should always be looking for ways to travel cheap and getting cheap airfares is the first thing you need to plan.

Savings on cheap airfares means you can save your money for something more luxurious you can enjoy on the trip – like a hotel suite or a first class flight or simply a free second trip.

And if you travel by air, you would already know that airfares cost typically forms the dominant chunk of your travel bill be it leisure or holiday.

And so, it goes without saying that saving something like 30%-50% on those airfares on average, every time, will go a long way to put extra money into your travel itinerary – that otherwise would have gone into the hands of airlines and their shareholders.

But it can get really confusing out there when people talk about cheap airfares.

Everybody is advertising cheap airfares nowadays and what you thought you might have gotten a great deal may turn out to be second or even fifth best after you found out how cheap airfares in the industry really works.

Airlines, travel agents, tour operators, travel advisors, everybody wants a chunk of your travel money and unless you know how the airfare system works, you will simply not getting the best deals in town.

And it does matter where, why, how and when you are flying because your airfare savings depend on all of the above.

And it also matters what you prefer:

- cheapest airfares without any comfort,

- cheap airfares but with comfort and style, or

- cheapest but you are actually not getting those cheapest airfares.

The best is obviously the middle choice. The first one is not exactly one that a typical traveller would choose for obvious reasons and the last one is just a throw-down and plain deceiving.

Flying on cheap airfares with comfort and style is what most of us would go for.

Well, to get the cheapest airfares but yet fly in comfort and style, you just have to understand how the airline and air ticketing industry work.

While the whole industry airfare intricacies are obviously not comprehensible by just an explanation in this one article alone (the travel industry is one of the biggest sectors in the world), travellers can still get cheap airfares and good air ticket savings by getting a basic understanding of the industry first and how all the players fit in.

One of the most important distinctions is that a deregulated market airfare system like in the US is far different from the international airfare market. The rule of thumb is that it’s certainly harder to exploit cheap airfares in a deregulated market.

This does not mean you cannot get cheap airfares in these markets, note this carefully, it just means compared to the average other Joe traveller in the market, you do not really get that significant a major advantage.

That said, there are loopholes of course, and cheap airfare tactics and strategies to exploit.

Note that there are more opportunities to get cheap airfares comparatively on international travel and it is a shame that common travellers do not exploit even these avenues.

Most sites will be advertising their cheap airfares gimmick but after understanding how the industry works, you are likely to wise up to these low airfare tactics.

Essentially, there are two major types of fares that is published and unpublished fares and this determines whether you get the cheap airfares that you want.

Published airfares are those which are available on the computerised reservation systems used by airlines and travel agents and which list down most of all the published airfares approved and filed with the respective countries’ governments.

For international airfares, these are regulated by the one sole dominant body called the International Air Transportation Association (IATA). These airfares got to be registered and approved by IATA and the respective governments who have aviation agreements between them.

IATA is the monitoring body of these agreements.

As a condition of membership in IATA, airlines agree to sell their air tickets only at IATA-approved prices. IATA regulations strictly forbid the direct discounting of air tickets directly to passengers.

In case you are pondering, more than 90% of the airlines companies worldwide are members of IATA.

The good news however is that airlines do discount their airfare prices unofficially off their published prices to travel agents/sellers who buy in bulk and get the large discount from the airlines. Right, that is where you can really get cheap airfares.

These discounts are passed on to consumers in the form of cheaper airfares. Note that strictly under IATA rules, airlines are not actually allowed to do any discounting of their approved published air ticket prices.

But it happens nonetheless as not all airlines seats are sellable at 100% their published prices.

These cheap airfares agents/sellers are known in the industry as consolidators/bucket shop/discounters (the terms are typically used interchangeably although there are subtle differences between them). Basically, you need to find these sellers for a truly cheap airfare deal.

The rule of thumb is that you should always seek out cheap unpublished fares from a consolidator especially on international routes. The next time you buy air tickets, ask your travel agents to seek out the cheapest consolidator airfares first and then compared them to the published airfares directly from the airlines.

Or buy online yourself from these airfare consolidators. Most of them don not sell to the general public (only to registered travel agents) but increasingly, many do.

Some of the good ones include www.onetravel.com, www.flights.com, www.priceline.com, etc., which are some of the largest ones in the US. You can save as much as 40%-60% of the typical published airfares and be amazed.
